I don't feel completely comfortable justifying my lyrics, but i have heard many complaints about how we're not a hardcore band and we shouldn't be saying ANYTHING about "bringing the mosh".
This song is intended to be a statement about the increasing presence of hierarchy and violence in the hardcore/metalcore/whatevercore scene. It's about how kids don't always feel safe to go to hardcore shows anymore because there is this feeling that if you're not in this tightly knit group of tough guys, you're an outcast. It's about how some kids will completely change themselves just to fit into this scene because they feel like if they don't slam dance or wear their gym/camo shorts, they're not proving themselves to everyone else. There are actually some kids who go to shows just to slam dance. I hear it on the train, at work, at school, EVERYWHERE.
"Hey man, you going to the show tonight?"
"Ya man. I'm gonna mosh so hard."
"Alright, just remember ______ runs the pit at (namedrop) shows. Better step it up or you'll get beat down."
Kids have too many things to worry about these days. They go to school and worry, they go to work and worry, they step out the door in the morning and they worry. Local music isn't something that kids should be worrying about. It should be about the music, NOT what you're wearing, NOT how you're dancing, NOT who you're hanging out with and how much scene cred you're getting. I just thought that kids got enough of this tough-guy bullshit in high school gym class, we don't need it in the local music scene.
Don't get me wrong, i'm not speaking out against hardcore music or "throwing down" or anyhting like that. I know and speak with lots of people who are really heavy into that scene. All i'm saying is that people just need to watch what they're doing. Keep it posi and respect one another. it's not hard!
