Atoms are five kids from San Diego playing new wave. Uh-oh, I said the n-word. We all remember how neo nu-wave swept the country...We all heard "Need More Time" and partied like it was 1979. Then some of us realized the Epoxies suck and so does most neo nu-wave. This band doesn't suck. The Atoms definitely have their roots in the pop/wave scene of the late '70s/early '80s. But before yer red flags go up...they like the good bands and they go to see them when they can. There are only four songs on this disc, so I'll break it down one by one. "Photogenetics"- I really dig this track, sounds a lot like "Turning Japanese" by the Vapors. I know some of you are probably rolling yer eyes, but I say fuck you, that was and still is a catchy song, even if it has been overplayed over the last two decades. "Operator Operator"- starts off as a tight little '50s rocker and mutates into a quirky wave tune. Not too shabby... "Post-Modern Generation"- this wouldn't sound out of place on the great Devo LP, Duty Now for the Future, which is one of my favorite LPs by the way. Great riff on this one, the spudboys would be proud. "Party Monster"- I picked up a real cool early B-52s vibe on this one, doesn't sound too dissimilar from "Rock Lobster"...nice male/femme vox interplay on this one. The songs are there, the production is alright but could be a little louder and more aggressive. If I had money, I'd put these songs out and it'd be a rad 45. But alas, I am poor. Ken Dirtnap, dig these kids!! -REVIEW BY TROY THRILLS
