The music of Astronaut Down strives to achieve a balance between the depth and complexity of progressive metal, and the accessible energy of mainstream rock. Intricate polyrhythms and ambitious song structures coexist with memorable melodies and subtly-evolving thematic progressions, all delivered with conviction and unmistakable vitality.
Astronaut Down began as a project to debut a series of instrumental progressive metal pieces at bassist Joe Morses senior composition recital at Purchase College in 2002. The chemistry between Joe and guitarist Jeremy Daigle that was immediately apparent from this one-time performance, continued into their inception as a trio, playing shows at venues around Westchester County. Now relocated to New York City, the line-up has filled out as a four-piece with vocalist Keith Bowen and new drummer Jeff Palermo.
Their influences range from old school progressive rock to contemporary metal, from melodic punk to post-hardcore. Astronaut Down plays new progressive rock, focusing on the composition, with a balance of elements accessible to a wide range of listeners.
Their new concept album Gods Eye weaves together dense layers of guitars over a pulsating rhythm section, constantly building an atmospheric uneasiness out of musical anxiety. While showcasing the bands technical proficiency, Gods Eye also tells the emotional story of a reluctant heros struggle with supernatural power in the face of the impending apocalypse. Whether carefully unfolding an elaborate instrumental passage or delivering an anthemic chorus, the 65-minute Gods Eye packs a powerful punch.
Astronaut Down is currently bringing their energetic live show to venues around New York City.
