Power pop phenom Ari Shine hit the ground running with the 2006 release of EP Age/Occupation, immediately earning comparisons from Village Voice and Time Out to a young Elvis Costello.
Tastemakers such as Burbank rock radio institution KROQ and onetime Rolling Stones mentor and producer Andrew Loog Oldham began to enthusiastically espouse Shine’s music on their airwaves, and constant touring attracted devoted fans on both sides of the pond. Indeed, Shine quickly racked up sterling pop credentials, having performed on bills with uber-cool names such as Ian Hunter, Redd Kross, Gin Blossoms, Peter Case, John Doe, Silversun Pickups, Gilby Clarke, Gob, Kris Rowe (the Ataris) and many others. TV viewers have heard him, too—Shine’s songs have been heard on Veronica Mars, Quarterlife, Kyle XY, Dance Life, Parental Control and Vive la Bam.
Such are Shine’s pop chops and sensibilities, for example, that his U.K. dates included a stop at Liverpool’s famous Cavern Club, the reconstructed stomping grounds of fairly popular hometown sons, the Beatles.
Shine’s 2007 album A Force of One was produced by acclaimed Los Angeles studio veteran and Sparks/Concrete Blonde guitar slinger Earle Mankey. Indie bible Big Takeover subsequently called him “a classic power popster of the stripped-down new-wave tense typeâ€; the Los Angeles Times described him as “songwriter-to-watch in the L.A. power-pop underground.†As co-writer of Spanish track “Escondidos,†Shine also won Song of the Year honors in the 2007 John Lennon Songwriting Contest!

Hey people! Been having a great time over here on tour with Carina Round and the Cinematics.

Hawaii Sun Shine
This has been a blissful week of shows and creativity in Hawaii. I have been on the island of Kauai meeting amazing people and playing shows at venues like Trees and Small Town Coffee. I have also been making videos that will be up on youtube soon. The people here are truly lovely and I fully intend to return to this place. Such a creative energy in the air!
I have recorded oceanside videos of Keep You in Cabs, It's A Shame and A force of One that I can't wait for you all to see!
Next stop Honolulu and the Rred Elephant. I will keep you posted!

Ari Shine “A Force of One” (Bongo Beat Records, 2008)
Shine provides polished pop sounds
Power-pop is one of those genre labels that, unlike Americana (which of course can include power-pop) is precise in its meaning. We all can agree what power-pop denotes - if I list out Raspberries, Big Star, Matthew Sweet, Cheap Trick, Velvet Crush, I don’t think that I’d get many arguments. We can just about agree what it is and what it isn’t. Shine definitely warrants inclusion, and these guitar based songs bristle with hooks, a kind of pop sea anemone packed with stinging melodies.
At times he sounds like a young Elvis Costello (see ‘Cooler than Me’ or ‘A Force of One’) and he throws in some curveballs with some Middle-Eastern touches on ‘Beirut 1978’ and some vintage synth sounds that make ‘Party People’ or ‘Beat You’ sound like Blur’s ‘Boys and Girls’ fighting for some of the Human League’s ‘Love Action’. At his best with the guitars turned up to 8, songs such as ‘She Wants It (More than Me)’ are efficient tours through the hinterlands of power-pop. ‘Cooler than Me’ with its high tempo and woodpecker piano provides a burst of energy, not quite ‘Kids on Coffee’ but definitely an adult still burning with excitement.
