Rush! Like honostly, you guys give me something to do lol. I can now challenge myself and try and learn all your songs. Anyway, I think Rush is a more underrated band. Most people are into like modern music such as punk, goth and that emo/anger music. Whatever, I think Rush is good for most people because it's the best of both worlds. Not all songs are completely heavy, they are softer and more unique. I guess you have to get used to the music. Anyway, they write good songs, and there's more to it than just giving me something to do. Rush is one of the most talented bands I've ever heard, and out of all the music I listen to, or have heard in my life, they stand out. Not just song wise. Let's look at the fact that Rush is such a small band. It is a band of three musicians: just a drummer, bassist, and guitarist. You would think well that is very basic, therefore their music must be pretty basic as well. Well let's get real. Rush's music is anything BUT basic. Go down to your local music store and pick up a nice bass. Bring that home and try learning YYZ or Hemispheres, or any Rush song. You will see for yourself, it much differs from that "three-chord" punk song that you wanted to learn. The basslines are so advanced, and you have to recognize Geddy Lee's talent there. But wait, there's more.
First of all, Lee is a bassist. Secondly, he is a vocalist/frontman. Thirdly, he is a keyboardist. AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST HE DOES SYNTH FOOTPEDALS WHILE PLAYING LIVE! Okay, so Geddy Lee is pretty much taking on four roles, well three if you associate footpedals with keyboard. Anyway, that's pretty incredible, and not only does he take on so many roles, but he is damn good at all of them too! Try pulling off those vocals! You know damn right you'll have trouble unless you haven't hit puberty. In addition he pulls off good basslines and writes some pretty neat synth riffs.
Next up, Alex Lifeson... An underrated guitarist!!! Why isn't there more Alex Lifeson-Influenced guitarists in this world? Anyway if you play guitar, you'll find it fun to learn his riffs and solos, and challenge yourself to the off-beat rhythms. Take 2112, a very very creative album. Lifeson pulls off some nice guitar riffs, and my favourite, "Discovery" a very creative song as it's symbollic of Discovering the guitar. It is so creative that the song get's better and more professional as it progresses. Alex Lifeson will also pull of some marvelous backup vocals that spice up the overall sound of Rush.
Lastly but certainly not least, we have Mr. Neil Peart. He is probably the most popular in Rush. Whenever I talk to someone about Rush, they always say, "Oh yea I've heard Rush. That's the band with the crazy skilled drummer!" This is true. Lot's of drummers are influenced by the agility of Neil Peart as well as his challenging drum fills and off-beats. It is certainly hard to nail that timing. Anyway, Peart is a tough drummer to imitate, kind of like Geddy Lee who has good basslines, and Alex Lifeson whose creativity is always up and beyond what is expected. Peart has excellent drum fills, if you listen to Rush songs, he is constantly busy, and the drum beats are constantly changing. This expands on variety, as the basslines and guitar riffs are already not very repetitive, which is a good thing. As well as banging the percussion, Peart is an excellent and very methodical writer. He writes all the lyrics for Rush, (modified by the other's input of course) and it follows very mystical topics such as: Greek Mythology, Medievil Times, Space and Planets, or just Everyday Life, or a very creative and extraordinary story. Look at 2112, or Hemispheres, they have great stories behind them, and it's easy to relate to.
So in the end, I think we can all realize, if we consider the facts, that Rush is a very talented band. This is one of the major reasons I am hooked on them. As a musician I have the advantage of judging music to a "deeper" and more vivid extent, because I can recognize challenges when I hear them or attempt to play them. Rush music is very difficult to learn as the music was carefully and methodically written. Also, let's look at roles here. We have Geddy Lee taking on, let's say three roles (even though he technically takes on four :P) Alex Lifeson taking on two roles (guitar and vocals) and Neil Peart taking on two roles (Percussion and Songwriting). With that, Rush, a band of three members has the musical ability and capacity to that of a band of seven members!!! And everything they do on the record (including all overdubs) they can perform live! I think that's pretty incredible. Anyway I just hope you get the message. Because there is too much to say about Rush and how talented they are, I will leave it at that. You be the judge, you decide what I left out :P
