Raised amongst siblings with diverse tastes in music front man, ethan Cook, grew up listening to anything from ani Difranco to led Zeppelin. shortly after starting freshmen year of high school cooks musical tastes began to diverge away from his weezer/hendrix/modest Mouse roots and gravitate towards a young singer/songwriter out of omaha, Nebraska. in addition to finding a lyrically gifted role model in bright Eyes front man, conor Oberst, cook also found his voice sitting amongst his friends on a late night song trade off session. in the coming year cook taught himself how to play guitar and began to write songs, striving for passionate and meaningful lyrics. shows soon followed the compositional stage, under many names and with many bands until cooks solo career finally blossomed. the worn teenage acoustic guitar act left a feeling of dissatisfaction with cook and the need to find a defined sound became more and more urgent. The song lawyers (and their virility) was written quickly in a friends basement and with that one three minute song an entire sound was isolated. The folkish soul rock hybrid was settled upon and american Fiction was well on its way to greater musical ambitions.
