ALIEN SLAVES ASSEMBLE! The ALIEN SLAVES are and will always be NJ's most notorious "drunk rock" band. Beginning in 1980, the "Slaves" could be found in every dive bar, frat house and club in Northern NJ/New York area performing their brand of Rock & Roll. (insert Slave cheer here) ENJOY my friends, an ALIEN SLAVES gig is a delirious experience, not just another band from NJ.
THE STORY OF THE ALIEN SLAVES
A long time ago, in a garage far far away..... The ALIEN SLAVES began.
Let's travel back in time to 1980. Scotty, Gerry, Ross and Cliff Govier started the band in a garage in NJ. The garage became Slave Studio, a rehearsal room, recording studio and place to crash for the band.
Where did the name come from? There's a great song called "DISEASE" by the legendary NYC band the DICTATORS (www.thedictators.com) that has the line "I had a dream I was raised by some alien slaves" The ALIEN SLAVES are huge fans of the DICTATORS (gerry is the recording engineer for their recently released live CD)
After one year of musical masturbation, Cliff left the band and Harry joined. Harry was a member of the ALIEN SLAVES until sometime around 1984-1985. One of the highlights of Harry's time in the band was a gig at The Show Place in Dover NJ the night after METALLICA played there. There is a recording of the gig (board tape) somewhere. (I'll try to add a song to the site if I find the tape.) Harry was also part of the ALIEN SLAVES' first multi-track recording session at the old Water Music Studio located at 201 Grand Street in Hoboken NJ. Recorded on an MCI 2" 16-track machine are 4 classics which include Harry's tune "Leave Me Alone (Don't)" and Gerry's "Together Alone."
After Harry had enough, Johnny Slave joined around 1985 and is still a member of the ALIEN SLAVES. Johnny (A.K.A. TKO) Slave and Ross' friendship goes way, way back. In fact, Gerry, Johnny and Ross used to jam together back in 1977-1978. Johnny's love of reggae and ska was a refreshing influence on the band when he joined and can be heard in the tunes "This Is The Life" and "Deck the Halls."
Several years past and somewhere along the line, Jay Slave joined the band. Adding Jay's guitar, vocals and great songwriting were a real plus for the band. Jay was also responsible for the artwork for the ALIEN SLAVES' first official release SEASON'S GREETINGS in 1988.
In 1989, Ross "the Boss" Slave called it quits. Jamie Jensen was recruited as the drummer for the 1989-1990 tour. Unfortunately, 1990 was the year that the ALIEN SLAVES stopped gigging and recording.... but never broke up officially. The recent interest in the ALIEN SLAVES from sites like PureVolume has started the reunion rumors which could lead to some gigs and more recording....... stranger things have happened....we shall see.
In 2003, we lost Cliff Slave in a tragic accident. Even though he was only with the ALIEN SLAVES for the first year, he remained close friends with the band and was a founding member. WE MISS YOU BROTHER!
In 2008 the ALIEN SLAVES' master tapes are getting dusted off, baked, and all of the songs are being remixed by CJ Scioscia at Le Chateau Bow-Wow (Watchung, NJ) and Gerry Slave at the Temple of Tuneage (Verona, NJ). We hope to finish a CD this year or next which should include every song recorded by the ALIEN SLAVES!
Watch out! the Invasion of the ALIEN SLAVES continues....
