Members: Alex Meixner
Alex Meixner carries on a family polka tradition brought to America four generations ago
by his Austrian great grandfather.
Building upon family musical foundations, this
dynamic young master of the diatonic button accordion has a fresh, musical voice that
has made him one of the most exciting performers on the American polka scene.
The Meixner family's musical heritage started with Alex's violin and cornet playing
Leopold, who emigrated from the Austrian province of Burgenland to
the U.S. in the early 1900s. Home to Germanic, Hungarian, and Croatian speaking
inhabitants, Burgenland's blend of diverse musical traditions shaped Leopold Meixner's
repertoire and that of subsequent generations of Meixner musicians, including Leopold's
son Alfred, who was affectionately known as "Skeeter."
In the early 1950s, Skeeter Meixner brought his son Al (Alex's father) into the
family band at the age of four. Performing in an American setting heavily
dominated by other polka traditions such as Polish and Slovenian, the Meixner's Austrian sound evolved and the band's repertoire expanded. Al Meixner became
an extremely versatile performer who toured with his own band for many years.
In the 1980s Al brought his 3 children- Christi, Alex and Katie into the family tradition as they performed as "the Meixner Kinder" in shows throughout the eastern and Midwest US. When the family moved to Florida, Alex's musical studies increased as he began joining his father on many gigs on drums, bass, keyboards, trumpet and finally accordion. Extensive national touring as The Al Meixner Trio intensified when the family moved back to Pennsylvania in 1995 and expanded the fan base to many areas of the country. In 2007- Al handed over leadership to Alex and The Alex Meixner Band's reputation as one of the most dynamic polka ensembles in the country continues
Only 31, Alex already has an impressive career spanning almost 25 years. He has
appeared at festivals throughout the U.S. and Canada, on the Tonight Show, with the
London Symphony Orchestra, and has appeared on over 40 recordings. In 2007, Alex
received a Grammy nomination for his work with Bubba Hernandez on Polka Freakout!
Equally at home with German "oompah", swinging Slovenian and the horn driven
Polish style, the
Alex Meixner Band sings in up to 7 languages plays over a dozen instruments and entertains at venues as diverse as concert halls, rock clubs and all kinds of music festivals...Only in America.
