Metalcore / Hardcore / Screamo
The band now formerly known as "...And Then You Die" has gone through numerous changes since the idea for the band was first envisioned in March 2004. That's when vocalist Joe Gaines and four other Bonita Vista Barons decided to form a metal band known as Innerface. With limited opportunities to practice, the project never got off the ground. Then in August, with one guitarist bound for UC Irvine, the band asked Hunter Knight to join. Chances to work together as a full group were few and far between over the next six months, but during this time, both guitar parts for "Come Back" were written, and Stephen Patek was asked to join Hunter as the band's second guitarist.
Hunter tranferred to UCSD in January and a month later found drummer Andrew Gomez one day while searching the pages of thefacebook.com for fellow musicians. Two weeks later Andrew drove all his drum equipment down from the Bay Area and four-fifths of AFB's line-up was complete.
One problem still plagued the band's outlook; the lack of a place to practice. One day, Hunter and Stephen decided to use Hunter's Fifth-floor UCSD appartment balcony as a venue! Soon after, Andrew joined in with his drums! finally, after a two hour show, the trio was asked to stop, though they were complimented on the performance.
That night they discovered that the band "A Park Tradition" had been practicing on-campus for quite a while in one of the lecture halls. The next week, AFB finally got off the ground. Three weeks later Andrew recruited Brandon Reynante from another band and with that, the line-up was finally complete. By the end of the school year the quintet had four songs complete, which you now have the opportunity to enjoy :)
After the summer AFB was reunited when Andrew moved back to San Diego for the beginning of school that September. During the winter break, Andrew and Hunter went to Europe for vacation. When they got back on January 6, they were in the Bay Area. The next morning they made the 500-mile drive back down to San Diego to play their first show as a band, a benefit concert for breast cancer. Along with the other acts, over $1,000 was raised, and the first video of AFB playing live was taken.
AFB considered the first show to be a success although they hadn't practiced in over 3 weeks. Even with the misshaps at the show (Andrew's snare drum fell over during the breakdown of the last song of the set), the show was still a large success, with AFB bringing the most people to the show.
4 Days later, they played their second show at a bar called Dreamstreet down in PB. They went on at 9, and played to an audience of about 10 (most of their fans being under 21 and not able to go to the bar to see them). The band felt they played well and it was too bad that the audience consisted of very drunk people in a bar on a wednesday night.
A few weeks later they were invited to play for Muir college within UCSD for MuirTV and to do a live interview for The Muir Report. The show went well, with 30 people or so showing up for AFB's performance. And although The Muir Report kept getting kicked off the air due to technical problems, the interview was a lot of fun.
On March 8, along with 9 other bands (including friends in Honest Iago and A Park Tradition) AFB played at the Hot Monkey Love Cafe near SDSU. AFB again brought the most people that night among the 10 bands playing that night, 25.
Since, then, AFB's guitar player, Stephen Patek, and singer, Joe Gaines, have left the band due to creative differences and the remaining trio recorded the 2 new songs, one of which is currently on Pure Volume (both are on their myspace site ~ myspace.com/afinalbeginning).
With the coming of summer, Andrew again had to leave San Diego for his home in northern California due to his financial situation (he's broke damn it!). Brandon went back to Temecula and Hunter stayed in SD to try and find replacements for Joe and Stephen. Although the search has not gone too well, the band hasn't lost hope.
In the beginning of Septermber 2006, the band will again be reunited.
