Diabetics are plagued with multiple complications secondary to uncontrolled, high numbers of blood glucose. In my practice, I see diabetics that suffer from kidney disease, failing eye sight, and cardiovascular issues. The most noted complication is peripheral neuropathy. This can be a progressive disease with the nerves in your feet and possibly the hands. Many treating neuropathy have been very unpromising, but new developments in surgeries may give patients hope.

The term peripheral neuropathy means the dysfunction and damage to the peripheral nerves of the body. It can be the effect of a a few different medical disorders and diagnosing the situation is definitely an extensive, and in most cases costly, process. There are several types of peripheral neuropathies and it is a challenging to quantify or measure all the symptoms. The symptoms are broad and subjective on the etiology. The common symptoms include weakness, numbness, burning pain or tingling in a extremity. The symptoms arise without warning, they are from time to time constant and otherwise don't follow any pattern.

People being affected by diabetic neuropathy with loss of sensations in feet can't feel pain on account of injury. They may not determine they've pebble within their shoes and make putting it on until it leads to a big wound. Also not only pebbles, they don't really feel pain from any injury. Now because they can't feel pain, any simple injury when repetitive could cause a wound.

Neuropathies secondary with systemic illness may or may not be reversible or sometimes only partially reversible. Diabetes mellitus is often a disease in which a variety of patterns of neuropathy can occur. Some types of diabetic neuropathies like mononeuropathies (involving only 1 nerve) and radiculopathies (involving nerve roots) are fully reversible and don't require any specific therapy. However, each other form, which generally involves lower limbs, is usually progressive and irreversible despite treatment. Still tight charge of blood-glucose levels must be followed to at least slow the progression which will help prevent other complications of diabetes. Hypothyroidism (Myxedema) causes entrapment neuropathies, and most of these are reversible in early stages if adequate treatment with thyroid hormone replacement is provided. Other types of entrapment neuropathies like Carpal Tunnel Syndrome are fully reversible in initial stages if treated adequately. Treatment is providing rest on the wrist, NSAID drugs (like Ibuprofen), or steroid injection in wrist and surgery (carried out refractory cases not answering treatment options). Later there can be some permanent damage, and it could be only partially reversible despite surgical treatment.

Along with decrease of the sense of touch, you could have extreme sensitivity to touch, even light touch within your feet and legs. Some people can't bear the load of a sheet on the feet at night. The problem is so widespread that there's a 'bed cradle' you can purchase to hold the covers off you so that you can sleep without any pain but nevertheless keep your feet warm.
