Members: Maggie Smith, David Watkins, Sam Gibson, Zack Bowman
Scapegoat was formed on March 4 2011 by long time OGCC singer Maggie Smith and Binding Oath guitarist Zack Bowman. In an interview with School Spirit show's host Zack commented on the start of the band: "Well me and Maggie were talking and she said she'd wanted to be in a band since she was like a little kid, so I said alright, let's make one." Shortly after the two had this conversation, Zack called up fellow Binding Oath member bassist David Watkins and recruited him. Drummer Sam Gibson, who had also always wanted to be in a band but never had found a group interested enough, was added later that night.
The band played live for the first time on March 12th 2011 at Trinity Christian School's anual Talent Show, playing their cover of Metallica's hit Enter Sandman. The group won the show by a close margin and was then offered a spot to be filmed for the new half hour television show School Spirit for which they were filmed again playing Enter Sandman on April 2nd 2011.
All four members of Scapegoat are devout Chrisitians and this comes across in some of the lyrical themes of their songs. Scapegoat plays a hard-hitting brand of alternative metal akin to Evanescence in the vocals but more closely resembling the minor key experimentations of late Slipknot in the instrumentals. Influences include such artists as Slipknot, Nightwish, Upperdeck, Stone Sour, Metallica, Evanescence, Alexisonfire, Alien Ant Farm, and even Michael Jackson.
