What does Chasing Friday mean?

If you’ve ever been stuck in a dead-end job (hopefully not anymore) you’ll know exactly what it means to be ‘chasing Friday’. This local Cape Town band with the quirky name came into being in late September 2007. Chasing Friday consists of lead singer Phill Black, backing vocals and lead guitarist Brendon Hull, bass guitarist Nico Mouissie and drummer Andrew Mellish.

With the release of their new single, Campus Girl, recorded at Dockyard Studios by luminaries like Matt Allison, Schalk Van Der Merwe (production), SAMA winner David Langemann (final mix) and Tim Lengfeld (mastered), the future is indeed looking bright for Chasing Friday.

Biography

Guitarist Adrian James Gregory and bassist Nico Mouissie had a deep love for music and were eager to form a band but there was one thing stopping them: they needed practice space. Little did they know that Andrew ‘Mule’ Mellish was just as eager to form a band. Three months after hooking up and creating music together, all they needed was a vocalist. They decided on recruiting an old school friend, Phill Black, an experienced front man, to join the trio, and a week later they essentially were Chasing Friday. November 2008 saw a change in the line-up. Adrian decided to focus on his studies, and Brendon Hull replaced him as guitarist.

Six months later, the band competed in the Cuervo Battle of the Bands, respectably placing in the top 5 out of 16 bands. In their second Cuervo Battle of the Bands outing, they finished in an impressive second place, as well as being the only band to play in both competitions.

The band then went on to compete in the Western Cape leg of the Radio Broadcast Facilities (RBF) emerging sounds competition and won, going on to perform in Johannesburg for the national finals.

Their first music video for 'It's Not Like London's Calling You' can be seen on Fuse TV in America and is on high rotation on MK and MNET's HD channel. Chasing Friday’s songs have airplay on Radio 2000, Tuks Fm and Mfm, and they have been interviewed on 5fm and Good Hope FM.

Chasing Friday, one of the most entertaining and energetic live acts in SA, has played with the likes of The Parlotones, Stealing Love Jones, aKING, The Dirty Skirts, CrashCarBurn, Taxi Violence, Bed on Bricks, Southern Gypsy Queen and Albert Frost.

Chasing Friday is actively involved in a number of charitable initiatives such as The Little Hearts Music Festival at the V&A Waterfront, Animals Rock Charity Festival and the Reach 4 a Dream foundation.

With the promise of even greater things ahead for the band, they will by the looks of it, be Chasing Friday in name only!
