Founded in late 2004 and based out of Honolulu and Kailua, energetic reggae collective 5th Freedom is a prominent force in the local underground scene. With members experienced in a wide variety of musical genres, the fiery four piece weaves a tight new blend of roots music, one uniquely infused with the best elements of jazz, funk, latin, and hardcore styles. Live sets are always high energy, featuring searing guitar playing, rich bass lines, backbeat percussion and versatile vocals. Most importantly, 5th Freedom expands the horizons of the reggae tradition while still staying true to the dance-inducing vibes characteristic of the roots rock sound, often surprising and exciting audiences with funky updated versions of classic reggae repertoire.

5th Freedom has performed in venues around the island of Oahu, thriving on both the local party scene and as part of event organizer Unity Crayons, sharing the stage with other local favorites such as Black Square, Pimpbot, Melodious Solutions, and Kapena. In the summer of 2005, the band released its self-titled debut album which received praise from Hawaiian audiences as well as underground music critics.
